Cosmetic Dentistry

Everyone loves a beautiful smile, but sometimes when one may have worn, stained, discolored, broken, chipped, misshapen, misaligned or have gaps between teeth, cosmetic dentistry can help you get a better smile. This is a popular dental branch that virtually gives you a ‘smile makeover’ and can help improve the appearance and aesthetics of your smile through certain cosmetic dental procedures. Depending on the procedure required, a dental treatment plan would be developed with you. Below are some of the broad types of cosmetic dental procedures available.

Types of Cosmetic Dentistry:

Teeth Whitening

Everyone loves pearly whites, however teeth discoloration is very common. Researchers have found that frequent intake of coffee, tea, wine, and cigarettes can cause teeth to discolor. In spite of regular brushing and flossing certain hardened stains cannot be removed for which teeth whitening is ideal. This procedure can be done with bleaching strips and laser whitening. There are whitening products that can be bought over the counter for home use too, such as rinses, whitening toothpaste, and Whitestrips.

Dental Veneers

Veneers are used for teeth that may be discolored, misshapen or chipped. The veneer itself is a wafer-thin, made to order tooth-colored porcelain or resin shell. It is applied on the front surface of the teeth after about half-millimeter of enamel is removed from the tooth surface. These thin shells are bonded to the front teeth which transform their color, size, shape, and length. These veneers are often referred to as ‘Hollywood teeth’, and this procedure is relatively more expensive than teeth whitening

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is meant to fix cracked, chipped, decayed or misshapen teeth, it is considered a good alternative to amalgam or silver fillings of earlier times. Essential, in this procedure, the resin is durable plastic material and is applied to the tooth. It is tooth-colored and is hardened by laser or ultraviolet light. It then trimmed, shaped and polished to look like the rest of your teeth.

Dental Crown

This procedure is meant to keep a weak tooth from breaking or holding together a cracked tooth. A dental crown is a cap, which fits over and substitutes the entire tooth above the gum line. It restores the tooth’s size, shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns are usually made from porcelain fused to metal, metal, ceramic or resin.

Inlays and Onlays

These are essentially indirect fillings that are made from silver, porcelain or composite materials that fill in decayed teeth. Most dental fillings are molded during a dentist visit, however, these inlays and onlays have to be created specially in a dental laboratory and later cemented into place by a dentist. It is called an inlay when the filling is bonded within the center of the tooth, on the other hand, an outlay is when the fillings a few points of the tooth that covers the biting surface. This procedure is meant to preserve as much of the healthy tooth as possible and could be alternatives to crowns.
